ASSESSMENT OF THE HEMOAGLUTINANT AND DIGESTIVE ENZYME INHIBITORY ACTIVITY OF EXTRACTS OBTAINED FROM DIFFERENT PARTS OF ATEMOIA Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Serquiz,Alexandre Coelho; Serquiz,Raphael Paschoal; Peixoto,Thayane Kerbele Oliveira das Neves; Santos,Elizeu Antunes dos; Rocha,Hugo Alexandre Oliveira.
ABSTRACT The benefits of various foods, such as fruits and vegetables, have been the focus of several studies aimed at improving welfare, health, and reducing the incidence of diseases. Therefore, the present paper objectified to investigate the presence of molecules of biotechnological and pharmacological interest in peel, seed, and pulp of Annona x atemoya Mabb. Aqueous extracts of the fruit parts were obtained with different buffers and assessed as to their protein and phenolic compounds content. The three parts of the fruit presented different proportions of these compounds when subject to different extraction conditions, with the highest concentrations of proteins being found in the seed and phenolic compounds in the peel of the studied fruit....

HIV-1 genotypes related to failure of nelfinavir as the first protease inhibitor treatment BJID
Tupinambás,Unaí; Aleixo,Agdemir; Greco,Dirceu.
Combined antiretroviral therapy results in sustained viral suppression and a decrease in mortality and morbidity due to HIV infection. Intrinsic strength, durability and absence of cross-resistance are key factors in the selection of antiretrovirals. Failure with nelfinavir has been associated with two protease gene mutations, D30N and L90M. The D30N mutation does not result in cross-resistance with other protease inhibitors, and it decreases viral fitness. In order to check for this mutation after failure with nelfinavir, the 246 HIV-1 genotyping test was performed on virus samples from 55 patients with failure of nelfinavir as the first protease inhibitor. Most (84%) of the viral strains were of subtype B. Nucleosides associated with mutations (NAM) were...

Metabolic syndrome in HIV-infected middle-aged women on antiretroviral therapy: prevalence and associated factors BJID
Akl,Lívia D.; Valadares,Ana L.R.; Moraes,Monica Jacques de; Pinto-Neto,Aarão M.; Lagrutta,Bianca; Costa-Paiva,Lúcia.
ABSTRACT Objectives: To determine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its associated factors in a group of HIV-infected middle-aged women. Methods: Cross-sectional study including 273 HIV-infected climacteric women of 40-60 years of age under care in two HIV outpatient reference centers in Brazil. Metabolic syndrome diagnosis was based on 2006 International Diabetes Federation criteria. Sociodemographic, clinical and behavioral factors were evaluated as well as HIV infection-related parameters. Results: Mean age was 47.7 years; 59.1% of women were premenopausal, 91% were on antiretroviral therapy. Current CD4 count was >500 cells/mm3 in 61.7%, current viral load undetectable in 76.9% of women, and a quarter had previous diagnosis of aids....

Partial characterization of digestive proteases in juveniles of Microphis brachyurus (short-tailed pipefish) (Syngnathiformes: Syngnathidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Martínez-Cárdenas,Leonardo; Frías-Quintana,Carlos A.; Álvarez-González,Carlos A.; Jiménez-Martínez,Luis D.; Martínez-García,Rafael; Hernández-Almeida,Oscar U.; Bello-Pineda,Javier; Arellano-Méndez,Leonardo U.; Ponce-Palafox,Jesús T..
ABSTRACT Short-tailed pipe fish (Microphis brachyurus) is a freshwater organism with high economic potential for the aquarium hobby, so it is necessary to implement methods to promote its culture through studies of digestive physiology. General activities of acid and alkaline proteases were evaluated, as well as the effect of pH, temperature and inhibitors. The optimal pH of stomach proteases was 2, while the optimal pH of intestinal proteases was 10. Optimal temperature for the acidic proteases was 35 ºC, while for alkaline proteases it was 45 ºC. Thermal stability showed high resistance at 35 ºC for both acid and alkaline proteases (above 100% residual activity). Acid proteases are resistant at pH 2 (50% of residual activity), meanwhile alkaline...

Protease Inhibitor and Metabolic Alteration International Journal of Morphology
Cavenaghi,F. M; Bataglion,C. A. N; Paula,P. C; Motta,A. C. F; Komesu,M. C.
Protease inhibitors (PIs), part of HAART (Highly Active Antiretroviral Therap) are selective, competitive inhibitors of protease, a crucial enzyme to viral maturation, infection and replication. A lipodystrophic syndrome has been reported in individuals treated with HAART, and associated to hyperglycemia, hypercholesterolemia, hypertrigliceridemia, hyperlipidemia, hypertension and hypreinsulinemia. The HAART-associated metabolic abnormalities were first associated with protease inhibitors, Ritonavir mostly, but the mechamisns that underlie these metabolic alterations are to date, not completely understood. Since PIs are candidate to be the drug of choice for other diseases treatment, such as the Hepatitis C, malaria and some types of cancer, it seems to be...

Safety aspects of protease inhibitors for chronic hepatitis C: adverse events and drug-to-drug interactions BJID
Teixeira,Rosângela; Nascimento,Yone de Almeida; Crespo,Déborah.
The standard of care therapy of chronic hepatitis C with the combination of pegylated interferon and ribavirin for 24 or 48 weeks was a remarkable accomplishment of the past decade. However, sustained virological responses rates of about 80% (genotypes 2-3) and 50% (geno 3 type 1) were not satisfactory especially for patients infected with genotype 1. Important advances in the biology of HCV have made possible the development of the direct-acting antiviral agents boceprevir and telaprevir with substantial increase in the rates of sustained virological response with shorter duration of therapy for a large number of patients. However, the complexity of triple therapy is higher and several new side effects are expected suggesting greater expertise in the...

Surimi of king weakfish (Macrodon ancylodon) wastes: texture gel evaluation with protease inhibitors and transglutaminase BABT
Kuhn,Cláudio Rafael; Prentice-Hernández,Carlos; Vendruscolo,João Luís; Soares,Germano Jorge Dorneles.
The protease inhibitors (bovine serum albumin -BSA - and egg white) and transglutaminase inhibitor (NH4Cl), was added to the surimi obtained by King weakfish (Macrodon ancylodon) wastes to evaluate your effect on the gel texture. Results indicated that the treatment with pre-heating (60°C, 30min + 90°C, 15min) favored the elasticity of the gel (ashi), demonstrating low proteolysis and characterizing the suwari phenomenon (high gel strength). Protease inhibitors increased gel strength significantly (P<0.05) by compression force, when BSA was better than egg whites. Gels from surimi of King weakfish wastes didn't have action of the transglutaminase characterized.

The Place of protease inhibitors in antiretroviral treatment BJID
Tenore,S.B.; Ferreira,P.R.A..
With the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy, a number of drugs have been developed. The best choice concerning which antiretroviral analogs to start is always under discussion, especially in the choice between non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors-based therapies and ritonavir-boosted protease inhibitors. Both are proven to control viral replication and lead to immunological gain. The choice between a non-nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitor and a protease inhibitor as a third antiretroviral drug in the therapy should consider factors related to the individual, as well as the inclusion of the best therapy in the patient's daily activities and potential adherence. The protease inhibitor-based therapies showed similar...
